Giving too much away?

It may be great to boost your profile by sharing details about the work you are doing for clients on your website – but it could be giving hackers the information they need to target you.

That is because many sophisticated data security breaches contain elements of social engineering. Criminals have recently been targeting individuals within organisations who publicise their work online. Law firms are a good example. Partners often advertise the specific projects they are working on, such as competitive mergers and acquisitions, or stock market offerings, inadvertently sending out a clear message as to who might have valuable data.

These individualised attacks are very formulaic, but difficult to detect because each is unique and so has no “signature” that can be picked up by antivirus software.
